CHAPTER 6

When they showed up at the farm, Sam and Bob exited the car. Bethany Davidson was on her way to the barn with a bucket of feed, and she seemed surprised to see them.

“Let’s see what the Weeping Widow has to say,” Sam said.

“Harsh.”

“Is it? We’ll soon see if I’m wrong about her. We just need that one clue to fall into our laps to get this investigation on the right track.”

They got out of the car and walked towards the barn. Bethany hadn’t hung around to wait for them. She’d entered the barn, and they found her feeding the pigs.

“Hello, Bethany. How are you?”

“I was fine until this morning, when Mick failed to show up for work. Luckily, I had set my alarm and was able to fill in and do his chores for him.”

“It’s very unfortunate. We’ve just come from speaking with Tara.”

“How is she?”

“Distraught, as you can imagine. So, are you telling me that Mick never showed up here at all this morning?”

“That’s right. I told Tara that when she rang earlier. Why, are you disputing it?”

“I’m not, I was simply clarifying the details. We’ve tried ringing his phone several times, but it’s diverting to the answerphone.”

“And what do you expect me to do about it?” Bethany said, her lip curled.

“I was merely stating facts. Did he mention yesterday that he was going to stop off for supplies or something on the way to work?”

“No, that’s not his responsibility, that will be down to me going forward. I’ll be organising the daily running of this place now that my husband is no longer with us. I would never let a mere farmhand take on the task of doing that.”

“But you’re going to need some help, running the farm and all it entails, aren’t you?”

Bethany frowned. “Obviously. That’s why I employ Mick, but if he chooses not to show up for work then there’s very little I can do about it. Maybe he and Tara fell out this morning and she’s covering her tracks and not telling you the truth.”

“Do they argue a lot?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t got a sticky beak, I keep my nose out of peoples’ domestic business, especially if it doesn’t affect the farm. Only this time it has.”

“Well, we have a couple of patrols out there searching for Mick’s car because, according to what Tara has just told us, everything was as it should have been at home when he set off this morning.”

“And? So you thought you’d come here and hassle me? Is this payback for me putting in a complaint about the way you treated me on your last visit?”

It was Sam’s turn to frown. “Not in the slightest. It’s your prerogative to complain about me if you believe I treated you appallingly. That is what you said, wasn’t it?”

“I might have, because that’s how I remember it. I caught you talking to Mick behind my back.”

“I wasn’t talking about you as such, as I explained at the time. Anyway, that’s in the past.
